What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are an injectable based on hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that is naturally created by the human body. They are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour and create or restore volume, and to revitalise the skin. They are a cost effective way to enhance your natural features and best of all, results can be seen immediately and last up for up to 9 months.
What Are Dermal Fillers Used For?
Dermal fillers can be used to restore volume or create volume where you wish there was more. They’re most commonly used to enhance facial features, focussing on the lips, cheeks, jaw and deep lines in your face, but they can also be effective at rejuvenating your hands, neck, knees and more. They can even be used to give your bum a lift!

What Areas Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Lip Fillers
Lip fillers can add volume for a fuller lip or replace any that has been lost over time for a more youthful look. Results can be seen immediately once any swelling has reduced, and usually last for up to 6 months before you need a top up.
Other types of lip augmentation are available, including fat transfer or even implants, but they are becoming less common due to the advances in dermal fillers and the greater risks and side effects associated with surgical options.

Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel based on hyaluronic acid, which closely resembles the very same substance our body naturally creates. It is therefore tissue friendly and very safe. By boosting the skins natural supply of hyaluronic acid, the filler can add volume to smooth out lines and wrinkles and create definition where you need it most.
Dermal fillers should only ever be administered by a doctors and trained medical professionals. Whilst very safe in the right hands, they can be dangerous if administered incorrectly.
There are many benefits to using dermal fillers as part of your treatment plan, including:
- Long lasting results, usually only needing top up treatments every 6-9 months.
- Results are immediate and require no downtime. You can be back at work the same day.
- Dermal fillers are known to stimulate your bodies natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, which creates a youthful glow.
- Procedures such as a non-surgical rhinoplasty or Brazilian bum lift carry far less risks and downtime than invasive surgical options.
Before the procedure your practitioner will evaluate and cleanse the areas for treatment. They may make small marks on your face to highlight the most appropriate places for the injections.
During the procedure itself it will only take a few moments to treat each area. Generally, patients report no pain during the treatment, however should you require it there are various anaesthetics available to be applied ahead of the procedure. It’s best to bring this up at the consultation if you think you may need it!
In all, the treatment should take between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the areas.
In preparation for dermal filler injections, you must:
- Inform the doctor of any medication you are on during the consultation phase, as you may need to stop some or all of it a week before your procedure.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 48 hours before the treatment.
- Cleanse your skin before heading to your appointment using a gentle cleanser and water, and avoid wearing makeup for as long as possible before the procedure.

Some patients report redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site, which is usually totally normal, nothing to be concerned with and should clear up in a week or two. However, when administered by a trained medical professional, dermal fillers are generally regarded as a very safe procedure with minimal side effects.
One of the biggest risk factors when undergoing dermal filler injections is the practioner. You must only ever see a trained doctor to administer this procedure.
There are other risk associated with the treatment, which differ to the individual. All costmetic procedures carry a degree of risk, however dermal fillers are widely regarded as a very safe procedure with minimal risk if aftercare advice is followed properly.
